Hi Everyone,
POLITICS- We try to stay out of the realm of politics in our clinic and on our newsletters, but every once in a while an issue comes up that is hard to discuss without pointing fingers. We’d like it known that we are “equal opportunity political bashers”. In other words, we tend to disagree a bit with most politicians, from either side of the isle, and have no problem speaking out about any of them when they do something we oppose.
Today, we are going to be going into one such issue, but please know that this issue is not just with the current administration. The last administration did similar things, and so did the one before that, and the one before that, and so on.
MONSANTO- We haven’t spoken much lately about Monsanto, the makers of Roundup and many other products, who in our opinion, are the epitome of a big “evil” company only concerned with profit.
In the past, we have spoken regularly of issues involving this company, and stopped only because we wanted to give everybody a break from our rantings about them. In case you aren’t familiar with Monsanto, here is a brief overview: they are basically a huge agricultural business who makes herbicides like Roundup and genetically engineered products, like seeds that produce plants that cannot reproduce (among other things). What is the benefit in that? If your crops cannot produce viable seed, then you have to buy seed fresh from the company every year which means more money in Monsanto’s pockets.
Monsanto has been caught doing so many dirty things that one newsletter wouldn’t be nearly enough to cover it all. But in a nutshell, they have been caught covering up proof from their own scientists that products like Roundup are much more toxic than we have been led to believe, and it is seeping into our water supplies. Also they have been caught letting their non-reproducing crops spread out onto nearby farms that do not want or use their product, and then suing the farmers for “using their products” until the farmer either goes out of business, or agrees to start buying from Monsanto.
THE RUB- Every administration has been under the influence of Monsanto, due most likely to the amount of money Monsanto is able to donate to our politicians. Every administration puts into law something that benefits Monsanto and other large corporations who create genetically modified organisms and genetically modified crops. Here is the latest:
The current administration recently signed into law a spending bill, HR933, that was supposed to be aimed at avoiding a government shutdown by ensuring that the federal government would be able to pay its bills for the next six months. However, hidden in this bill, in section 735, is a provision named the “Farmer Assurance Provision”, renamed the “Monsanto Protection Act” by its detractors.
Section 735 of this bill basically bars federal courts from being able to halt the sale or planting of GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) or GE (Genetically Engineered) crops and seeds, no matter what health consequences from the consumption of these products may come to light in the future. In other words, even if these products are proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be a danger to humanity, they cannot be banned or taken off the market.
More than likely, Monsanto wanted this provision because more and more information on the problems their products are causing are coming to light, which has resulted in other nations banning its products. With this bill, America cannot ban these products, no matter how toxic they are.
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER?- In what may be considered a slight glimmering ray of hope, or just further proof that our leaders don’t read their own bills, it was reported that most of our leaders who voted on the bill were not aware of this provision.
Hope this helps,
Dr Matt and Dr Robin

This week’s bit of Useless Information: Due to WW2 rationing, cocoa was scarce in Italy. An Italian baker created an alternative chocolate spread that would later be renamed Nutella.
