Hi Everybody,
Here are this week’s tidbits for you…
ROUNDUP, THE WEED and PEOPLE KILLER- A new study has found that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup Weed Killer may be the most dangerous chemical in our environment, capable of producing a wide range of fatal human diseases. (Entropy. 2013; 15(4):1416-1463) Glyphosate is unfortunately the most popular herbicide and can kill everything but genetically altered plants. Over 180 million pounds of the chemical are now used in the US each year.
The possible diseases being caused by the use of this toxin includes, but is not limited to inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis), anorexia, cystic fibrosis, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and infertility.
OIL PULLING- “Oil pulling” is an ancient folk remedy for a wide variety of disorders. The first documented use is around 1500 years ago. We are not really sure what we think about this technique, but it is safe and some people swear by it, so we thought we’d pass it on.
To do this remedy, you take one tablespoon of sesame, coconut or sunflower oil and swish it around in your mouth for approximately 15-20 minutes on an empty stomach, then spit the oil out.
The theory is that it is not only good for oral health, but also for many diseases – from migraines to diabetes and asthma. Modern science is supposedly confirming that for oral health, oil pulling is as effective as mouth wash, killing off a wide variety of abnormal bacteria in the mouth. Since infections in your teeth and gums have been found to cause a cascade of infection and inflammation in other parts of the body, the killing of pathogenic microorganisms in the mouth is believed to benefit the health of the entire body.
A PESTICIDE NAMED SPLENDA- We’ve all heard the commercials – “made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar”. Well, did you know that Splenda (sucralose) is a brand new, artificially created chemical that did not exist in this Universe until it was created in 1976? And did you know its structure is only a few atoms away from the deadly pesticide DDT?
Splenda has been linked to shrunken Thymus glands, enlarged kidneys and liver, abnormal changes to the spleen, DNA damage, abnormal changes to the good bacteria in the intestines, abnormal changes to the bone material of the pelvis, decreased red blood cell count, decreased body weight of newborns, inflammation of the bowels (Crohn’s Disease), migraines and diabetes.
Splenda does start out as a sugar molecule, but through the manipulation of its structure, it becomes a “chlorocarbon” instead of a “hydrocarbon” (which is what sugar is). As a chlorocarbon, Splenda becomes chemically similar to, and in the same chemical family as DDT, insecticides, biocides, disinfectants – like bleach – and poison gas – like dichlorourea.
Hope this helps,
Dr Matt and Dr Robin

This week’s bit of Useless Information: A Four Leaf Clover is actually a mutation of the shamrock (a three-leaf clover), it can only happen in approximately 1 in 10,000 shamrocks.
