We recently had a very interesting situation in the clinic. This is nothing new, but it happens regularly enough that we wanted to mention it.
MR KNOW IT ALL- A friend and patient of the clinic has had a genetic kidney disease all her life. She is young, but the kidney numbers on her blood tests started going downhill very fast, which obviously scared her.
She was very upset with her medical care because the doctors were monitoring the condition at regular intervals, but were not offering any treatment. Evidently, they were just waiting for her kidney function to get bad enough where she needed dialysis.
Here’s the rub for us – they not only were not doing anything, but they told her there was nothing on earth that could be done, that the only thing she really could do was to enjoy the time she had and hope for the best.
ACUPUNCTURE- This lady decided to try acupuncture for her problems. After some time, when they redid her blood tests, her kidney function numbers had come back up pretty significantly. The medical staff was ecstatic… until she told them that she had started acupuncture and felt that it had helped her.
At that point the medical staff got a bit upset and told her that their staff doctor studied around the world and that if there were an effective treatment HE would have found it. Then they lectured her on the dangers of herbs and other things that weren’t mainstream medical.
I’m not claiming a cure for kidney disease, or anything like that. I’m just glad it is helping, but this points out an attitude that seems to be all too common in the medical community.
THE ATTITUDE- For some reason, if a medical doctor treats you and you get better, the medication always gets the credit. But if anything other than medicine is used, then many many doctors claim the disorder must have healed on its own – apparently in their mind, there is no way anything other than a medication or a surgery could actually work.
In addition, and this may be the worst part, many of these medics are so certain of their position that they believe if they cannot help you, then there is no help, period. There are no other options. They are the authorities and if they cannot help then it simply cannot be done.
And when a situation like that faces them, and they tell you nothing can be done, to just enjoy your time and hope for the best, then they have taken away the most powerful medication you have left… Hope. There is always another option, and there is always hope.
Hope this helps,
Dr Matt and Dr Robin
