Here are a few new tidbits for you…
GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS CAUSING TUMORS- Genetically modified foods are everywhere now, despite some pretty fierce opposition from scientists and the public. Health officials promise these “frankenfoods” are absolutely safe and pose no health threats.
Recently, a study was performed on rodents who ate a diet of Genetically Modified Foods over a two year period, which is considered a normal lifetime for them. (The study was published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology.) The French study claims to have found high rates of tumors in these rats.
According to the authors of this study, these results mean long-term studies on the effect of Genetically Modified Foods on humans need to be performed, as the only research that has been performed so far has been very short-term. It may be the tumors caused by these foods take years to develop, not months. (Thanks to RB of NC for this one).
HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHIROPRACTIC- Sometimes it is hard for people who are not regularly exposed to Chiropractic to understand the devotion some people have to the practice. To a large extent, we are a product of our environment.
It was estimated years ago that the average American child had been exposed to over 20,000 hours of drug commercials by the age of 16. It is no surprise then that most Americans see the use of drugs and surgery as the primary vehicle of health care – it is what they have been told by TV, magazines, and the pharmaceutical and medical establishment. And it is also not hard to understand why other practices, like Chiropractic and Acupuncture, seem foreign – it is simply not something they have been exposed to over and over.
Yet there is a segment of society that uses regular chiropractic care to prevent health problems. In a recent study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (May 2007), it was found that people who used chiropractic regularly enjoyed 60% less trips to the hospital, 85% less use of medications, 59% less time in the hospital and 62% less outpatient surgeries and procedures.
GIVING BABIES ANTIBIOTICS COULD LEAD TO OBESITY- Giving babies antibiotics before the age of 6 has now been linked to obesity. According to one study, the good bacteria in our intestines play a large part in how we absorb nutrients. Exposure to antibiotics early in life kills off those good bacteria and alters how we absorb nutrients from food, causing a cascade effect that leads to obesity.
Changes in the healthy bacteria in the intestines has also been linked to Asthma, irritable bowel, autism and many other conditions. In the study, obesity did not show up immediately, but over time, and was increased by 22% in the children who had antibiotics before the age of 6 months. After 6 months, antibiotic use did not seem to be linked with obesity.
Co-author Jan Blustein stated, “For many years now, farmers have known that antibiotics are great at producing heavier cows for market.” This does not mean that if your child really needs antibiotics to forgo them, but it does mean there are consequences and that giving an infant antibiotics should only be done when absolutely necessary.
Hope this helps,
