Follow Up to Flu Shot Controversy- a letter

Hi Everyone,
Last week we sent out a newsletter that quoted a study of the effectiveness of flu shots. The study found that flu shots did not improve the mortality rates in any age group. We got a reply back from someone that we wanted to share with you all. (We have taken out any names to protect the privacy of the people involved.) This reply was from a pharmacist.
“My husband, ****, took the flu shot back in the winter of 2001-2002. He developed brachial plexus neuritis and lost the ability to move his arm for almost a year. He had massive muscle wasting, etc… all because of the flu shot. What’s worse is that a co-worker of his at ******* developed Guillain-Barré Syndrome. What is ironic is that the fact sheet states that it is “temporary.” He’s been paralyzed from the chest down in a wheelchair for over 5 years. I am very anti-flu vaccine and will never take this shot no matter how many news reports of how important it is, etc… I was almost fired from my last job because I refused it and the TB skin test. ”
As a side note, we have seen several patients already this year who have gotten pretty sick – to the point of being bed-ridden for several weeks – after getting a flu shot. The elderly seem to be most susceptible to this.
We always welcome your comments and questions.

Hope this helps,

Dr Matt and Dr Robin
